Jeff,
It really isn't dependent on the weather, that is, sporatic E. Sporatic E
generally occurs in the summer due to the earth's inclination toward the Sun
as far as the northern hemisphere. You'll see more of this in the coming
years as sunspot indices rise.
I heard a couple stations back in June on the FM broadcast band. You can
get a good idea if there will be Sporatic E if you can monitor either
channel 2 or 3 with an outside antenna. Usually, you'll hear stations
coming in from the south or southwest; provided you don't have a local
channel 2 as you do in Detroit. I think the closest channel 3 to Detroit is
Cleveland and then Kalamazoo.
