Hi,

I got quite a few responses from people who had pancreatitis prior to being
diagnosed with celiac. Seems like a few people even had surgeries to deal
with pancreaitis before knowing they had celiac.
this may have been prevented if they had know they had celiac. I was lucky
to have been tested for celiac after a bout of acute pancreatitis before
they talked about removing anything from me.

Here is a summary of what people wrote: (none of this is medical advice from
a doctor)

- untreated celiac can cause inflamation damaging the outlet of the
pancreatic duct which can cause pancreatitis. Then the duct does not open
and the pancreatic enzymes cannot drain out and activate inside the
pancreas.

-the university of maryland notes a connection between pancreatitis and
celiac but no stats are provided. not much literature on the subject.

-One person suggested an article: http://snipurl.oatq which basicaly states
that celiac can cause pancreatitis because of inflamation of the duodenal
inflamation and papilary stenosis (when the spinchter of oddi mechanism is
disturbed.)

Thanks,

Jessica (Boston)
