I've never had that problem with any spyware removal tools I have though I 
primarily use ad-aware over most anything else.

Today, I saw Spybot mentioned for the first time here and so I went to their
website.  After reading the tutorial I decided not to download and install
it because I got the impression that I could erase some very important stuff
if I wasn't careful and just kept clicking the next button.  Am I right?  Is
it worth the risk?
