Summary 2 of Accidental Ingestion of Fruit (Continued)
14. Call Trader Joe's Corporate Headquarters 922 Highland Ave., Needham Heights, MA 02494 781-433-0234
TJ tries very hard to provide accurate information on their packaging but they are reliant on their PROVIDERS to give them proper information since TJ's does not manufacture anything themselves. It's not like Kraft, where they have ultimate control over what goes into a product or how it is produced. They try a lot harder in this persons opinion to get it right than some other companies who contract out. You need to speak to the staff nutritionist. May need to wait a few days but she will call back.
15. My Note- CSA Gluten free product listing gives lots of product listing gives lists of all kinds of products including frozen fruits such as Wild Oats organic frozen fruit berry blend, peaches and raspberries, whole strawberries, wild blueberries. It lists many brands of all kind of foods all over the country. Frozen vegetable sample is Birds Eye Foods-all plain vegetables without sauce. You can order the book from The Celiac Sprue Association of America. Another wonderful book is Wheat Free, Worry Free- The Art of Happy Healthy Gluten Free Living by Dana Korn published by Hay House 2002. This book gives all the hidden gluten ingredients that you might see in food in addition to all kinds of other information about CD. Both books have helped me choose appropriate foods but I have still had two accidental gluten ingestions in 2005 when I tried new products. One with maltodextrin made ouside the US and now this one with citric acid made outside the US. Some kind person also told me recently that US products sometimes use ingrients like maltodextrin which are made outside the US. The maltodextrin I ingested for about two weeks in March was a US company. Very confusing to figure out but I am learning more each day about the hidden ingredients.
I stopped eating the frozen chunks of mango, pineapple and papaya infused with passion fruit juice and each day felt a little better. The symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, acute stomach pain, irritability, migraine headaches, extreme exhaustion, muscle twitches and muscle aches all began to go away. It feels like a bad case of the flu when I accidentally ingest gluten. In two weeks I was almost back to normal. I have had all three fruits individually in the past with no untoward reactions. I also eat 3 to 5 servings of all kinds of fruit each day normally without any difficulty. I called the Trader Joe's staff nutritionist and she called the company that produces the fruit which is in Ecuador. They said the passion fruit juice was processed with citric acid but didn't say whether the citric acid was made from wheat. Due to the response above stating citric acid can be made from wheat if product is made ouside the US and the frozen fruit reaction symptoms I had and my feeling better each day when I stopped eating the fruit tell me that it probably was made from wheat. The reaction of feeling worse every day until I track down the culprit food and then feeling better each day after the food is stopped are my typical reaction.
Also had my Enterolab tests done at the end of the reaction and will be writing soon about the results. I have a few questions to ask about the results but sense the numbers may be up a little due to the accidental ingestion for a week or so before the test.
Thanks again to each of you who responded to my question as you really do help me figure out some of mysteries of CD.
Gratefully,
Robin in Massachusetts
