Hi. I have always been on the chunkier side, never have I been skinny
and from what my doctor has told me, I've probably had Celiac since
birth. I'm 29, 5'1", and 141 pounds. I've always been a little heavy
(and it always shows more when a person is short - like many of us
Celiacs) and have always been disappointed that the experts say it
often means being very skinny and unable to gain weight. Are you in
this boat, too? 3 of my aunts, however, are all very, very thin -
80-90 pounds and just a bit taller than me. Go figure. I have to be
the fat, young one.
~~
I was very overweight when I first suggested to my gastro dr the possibility
of celiac. He dismissed the issue because of the fact I was over weight. I
then lost 60 lbs that year before suggesting it to his partner at my annual
physical. I told him of how I had done it on the atkins diet and how I had
actually felt better than I had in over 10 years. That statement prompted
him to test me for celiac. Bingo.
After going gf I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. Not sure why because I had
basically been eating low carb food which is generally gf, or at least wheat
free.
I don't think being underweight is a tell tale sign like they used to think
so.
~~
I was about 35 overweight at the time of diagnosis. I had been loosing 1 to1 1/2 pounds per day for over a month, so I would have been about 70 pounds overweight.
~~
Dawn, I was often overweight by as much as 30 lbs. during my mid-years, but wasn't diagnosed until I started losing weight, even though I had lots of symptoms; stomach pain, anemia, osteoporosis, other autoimmune conditions, depression, low energy, memory loss and on an on.
