That's about 7 or 8 years old.  I would connect with the usb cable.  Once you plug it in, does your operating system recognize the printer for what it is and install any drivers?    If not, do you have a cd with software drivers on it with drivers for your operating system (XP?)?  Some older printers may not be compatible with your os.  A brief web search suggests that it uses lexmark drivers.   Driverguide.com might have the drivers you need, if that is the issue.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Printer connection

I'm trying to connect a compaq IJ600 printer to my compaq computer...

I have a USB connector & 4 USB ports on the PC...
I don't know where to plug in
In hardware setup I don't know what to choose ...COM1 LPT1 USB something?
The printer will do a test page on every connect but can't print a WORD doc
