Hi, John. Still in a pair of crates in the basement of the ICA&CA,
last I checked. The institute had to delay the project of curating,
identifying and displaying the collection -- hopefully there will be
funding in '09.
Background: Master Woodcarver Dick Reid (from York, England)
recently retired and couldn't find a taker for the study collection
of woodcarvings he kept in his workshop for the use of apprentices.
Henrika Taylor of The Institute for Classical Architecture and
Classical America flew out there to look over the collection and take
a few pieces for the institute-- and she came home with the entire
collection, having helped to sort and crate them all. She couldn't
pass up such an extraordinary resource. She invited me in to peep at
what emerged from the top layers of the crates, and it is truly
wonderful what is in there. Mouthwatering. A treasure trove.
I took several of the smaller pieces to display during my one-day
woodcarving demo at the Boston Traditional Building conference back
in the spring, to start the PR and let folks know about the collection.
Eventually, the study collection will be on display at the ICA&CA,
and there is talk of a book documenting it.
