Not sure I agree with you, Ruth. I think we naive newcomers are actually
needed and appreciated in a special way. Like Pam, when I moved to a small
town to take up managing the Provincial historic site, the locals quickly
made me the President of the Chamber of Commerce too. They need people
like us with none of the old baggage of fence wars and personal arguments
from the past. People like Pam and me are new meat for the table, ready to
devour. In my case, the locals were greatly relieved to have someone
willing to fill the executive role, because everyone else was burned out or
still smouldering from some recent or past disagreement. I could talk with
anyone without prejudice, and they each looked to me as a potential new
ally for their own interests. Any town is like a garden. It needs
pruning and replanting from time to time. The newcomer allows a fresh
moment in the life of the town. Maybe we are simply like fresh manure, but
even that has a purpose, if only to provide the opportunity to come together
with old associates and complain
about the smell.
