The cable position should not affect the master and slave settings. However,
one of my computers will not accept master and slave drive designation on
the same IDE channel when the two devices are hard drive and optical drive.
I have to set the drives to cable select and then the position on the cable
determines the master and slave designation. Therefor, on my other
computers, I always try to match the drive designations to the cable
positions even if not required. I find that it precludes possible
frustration.

Subject: Position of HD on interface cable

If the jumpers on 2 hard drives set their master and slave status, does it
matter which position they occupy
on the interface cable?
