I've used samller heating pads on a temorary basis.  
But as for electric blankets. You shouldn't sleep with them. You should use them to warn up you bed before going to bed but I'd turn it off before getting into bed. Heck, I'd unplug it.  One caught my aunt's house on fire back when I was in high school.
