Kathleen,
This sounds like a possible case of overheating.
If you have been inside the box, or have a friend who is capable , I suggest
checking all fans
to be sure they are running when shut down occurs.
Check for dust and or dirt on components, fan blades and vents.
HTH,
Hal Seabolt

Subject: [PCBUILD] Bad power supply or MB?
Hello,
I have recently had an issue with my computer shutting down in the middle of
minor activity. This first occurred about one and a half weeks ago, then
again yesterday, twice. Each time it restarted and ran chkdsk, all was
fine, seemed to be fine in every respect. Then the next time this happened,
the computer was up for only 10 minutes or so, I was working and then
poof..it went off. I started it again, and as soon as it was completetly
up, again it shut down.
I have assumed it was the power supply, but seem to recall that it could as
well be the MB. Can anyone offer clues as to how to determine what it is
for certain?
Thank you as always for any help....
Intel Pent 4, 2.8, Soyo dragon2 mb. System is approx 4 years old...Power
supply currently is 475, not sure what more you need to know to help...Thank
you,
Kathleen LaValley
