If you go ahead with this project,
The only "safe" way to by RAM is to look up the machine and
see what the spec were, (including max RAM), and/or what
you can get as new...
RAM types come and go quickly, so when you need some,
if it is not on sale - you are either too early (it is high priced)
or too late (it is high priced since there is low demand.)
It is tough to get "good ram" right when the price bottoms out...
If at all possible, get an eval version of XP, (I have seen
them on some legal WEB sites for around $5), or do a
temporary non-activated install on a blank or cloned HD,
to check out your existing hardware.
(Disclaimer: Eval versions only work for a TOTAL of 120
days, and still need activation, in 15 days.)
I have played with both types of installs on older machines,
and sometimes a new video card (or other really necessary
hardware) is needed because of lack of driver support...
(Bummer, and adds to the cost...)
Good luck.
