Hi Ashley,
Gout is the result of the presence of uric acid crystals in one or more
joints. These crystals are extremely sharp. Any movement of the joint causes
cuts which cause inflammation and pain.

Uric acid is produced in the liver and is usually excreted in the urine but
some of people are unable to excrete all of the uric acid their livers
produce, which results in an accumulation of uric acid. This may be because
of decreased kidney function, excessive consumption of foods containing
purines, taking certain medications, or from some unknown cause.

Dietary intervention usually involves eating foods that contain lower levels
of purines. (Foods high in purines include organ meats, gravy, alcohol, and
a wide range of sea foods.)

Cyclosporine, aspirin, diuretics, and levodopa, can also increase retention
of purines.

I'm skeptical that a paleodiet would be helpful to this person.

Best Wishes,
Ron
