By Momodou Justice Darboe & Njaimeh Bah
The United States ambassador to The Gambia, Joseph D. Stafford, has highlighted that citizens must have the ability to express themselves and to debate alternative ideas. He added that media institutions that are independent from the state allow the peaceful expression and competition of ideas, on which democracy depends.
US Ambassador Joseph D. Stafford,
says Gambian citizens should be able to express
themselves freely without fear!!!
Speaking at a reception on Wednesday at his residence in Fajara to mark World Press Freedom Day, ambassador Stafford, quoting a statement by President Bush in his second inaugural address, said the policy of the United States is to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture.
According to the American diplomat, President Bush’s words make clear the importance of a free, lively, and responsible press that informs and educates the public, and provides a check on power.
He pointed out that the efforts of the US range from including media freedom issues in their dialogue with governments and others ,to providing training and material assistance to media institutions, to supporting exchanges between US and foreign media representatives.
“For example, we are assisting the Gambia Press Union by providing it with a printing press,” disclosed ambassador Stafford.
“Today, on World Press Freedom Day ,we recognize the important contributions of a free press and pay tribute to those working on behalf of so worthy a cause ,”he emphasised.
