    Ok, John.

The button you are referring to near the tuning knob seems to be
similarly placed to the one on my IC718.

Will give it a try.

It's a shame it's not any easier to enter frequencies. The 718
and 746 have a key pad which makes a world of difference.

Best 73 from Tomn Behler: KB8TYJ

For the frequency read out and s meter, hold the lock key in for
1 second,
it's the one to the left of the tuning dial on the bottom, you
have the mode
on top, then step size is a little to the left and down, then is
the display
button just below that to the bottom of the tuning dial, and
under that, a
little to the right, but still to the left to the tuning dial is
the lock
button, you push that fast to lock the tuning dial, and hole it
for 1 second
for the Read out in speech. Best way to tune in frequencies on hf
is with
the tuning dial or get the QSY'r, if you're talking about
UHF/VHF, you can
use the up down buttons on the mic, or I believe you can make it
so the
multi function knob, the one in the middle of the IF shift knob,
under
volume and just like the volume control, I think you can tune
with that, but
don't hold me to that, that might just be for memory, U use the
up and down
buttons on the mic for that or the QSY'r. We have 3 or 4 of them
never even
used at the emergency management office here and I have mine
which is going
on vacation with me when I leave Saturday and it's all set. Hope
I helped.
