For the frequency read out and s meter, hold the lock key in for 1 second,
it's the one to the left of the tuning dial on the bottom, you have the mode
on top, then step size is a little to the left and down, then is the display
button just below that to the bottom of the tuning dial, and under that, a
little to the right, but still to the left to the tuning dial is the lock
button, you push that fast to lock the tuning dial, and hole it for 1 second
for the Read out in speech. Best way to tune in frequencies on hf is with
the tuning dial or get the QSY'r, if you're talking about UHF/VHF, you can
use the up down buttons on the mic, or I believe you can make it so the
multi function knob, the one in the middle of the IF shift knob, under
volume and just like the volume control, I think you can tune with that, but
don't hold me to that, that might just be for memory, U use the up and down
buttons on the mic for that or the QSY'r. We have 3 or 4 of them never even
used at the emergency management office here and I have mine which is going
on vacation with me when I leave Saturday and it's all set. Hope I helped.

Subject: some quick questions on the Icom 706 Mark II. G.

Hi, all.

As EC/RO for my County here in Michigan, I'm in charge of setting
up a completely functional ham station at our County's Emergency
Operations Center. One of the radios we have ordered for this
set-up is an Icom 706 Mark II. G.

In setting up this radio yesterday, I came up with two rather
basic questions, for which there must be obvious answers:

1. How do you get an audible frequency read-out on the radio
with the UT102 speech chip? The chip reads out mode info, but
not frequency or S meter reading. What button do we push, and
where is it on the radio?

2. What's the best way to enter frequencies into the 706 Mark
II. G. memories? Since you can't do it via a key-pad or the
microphone, we seem limited to dialing in the frequency itself,
and then setting the parameters before writing things into a
memory channel. It just seems like there has to be an easier way
to do this.

I'm going to check "icanworkthisthing.com" and the Handiham web
site for a users manual, and maybe a quick reference card, but
thought I'd ask these basic questions first, since someone on
this list probably knows the answers right off the bat.

Thanks, and best 73 from Tom Behler: KB8TYJ, Big Rapids, MI
