Hi Lou and All,

I was quite surprised also because I would have thought the same thing.
But, the 480 has a better noise floor than the 2000, the audio DSP actually
works better than the RF DSP in the 2000 and the selectivity is much better.
Let me just give you the example of 6 meters here. We have a lot of big gun
stations in the Seattle metro area including a couple of high powered ones
not too far from me here in Federal Way. With both the 2000 and the Icom
746 and 746 Pro, it was pretty much impossible to get within about six to
seven kHz of one of these big stations and still be able to hear anything
else. With the 480 I can move to within two kHz or so and still be able to
pull out a weak one. Same applies on the HF bands and with the combination
of pass band tuning and the DSP, you can do wonders on a crowded band. On
CW, with the 500 Hz filter in and the DSP width set for 300 Hz, the pass
band is surprisingly narrow. And, the audio recovery of the 480 is superb.

The one feature the original Icom 746 had which I wish this rig had and
which was not incorporated on the 746 Pro was the audio peaking feature.
With that you could bring a CW signal in the noise up to Q 5 copy, very much
like I used to be able to do with the Q multiplier on my old Halicrafters
receiver. If I could add two things from prior radios to this 480 it would
be that peaking feature from the 746 and the voice squelch from the 746 Pro.

I hope that answers your questions Lou. No, I don't know if the
specifications are better than the 2000 but my on air experience here sure
tells me it is a better receiver.

Take care all and very 73.

Kevin :)
