For what it's worth, I have an old Cushcraft R7, which doesn't require
radials. That antenna got me a lot of state-side and DX contacts when my
antenna options were otherwise very limited. The R7 is still up in my back
yard on an 8-foot fiber-glass pole. I have a ground rod and some grounding
cable for at least some sort of grounding system, and, knock on wood, it
still works fine to this day.

So, don't give up the ship.
