Rick,
Thank you very much. "Synaptics" was the clue I needed. There was no Synaptics software on the computer and I couldn't find a 9300 XP touchpad driver on Gateway's site. I went to Synaptics' site and got a generic XP touchpad driver. It installed easily and the tapping is now disabled. It's like having a new computer. Thanks for your help.

This may fit your OS and it might not.
You might have to look for a new Synaptics mouse driver.
Try this first: (Quote from the following link:)
On your screen, locate and click the Start button.
From the Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Mouse icon.
