Hello,

Can anyone help me install win xp home on a newly formatted drive. The hard drive is a 40 GB HD and is installed on a HP Compaq d530S. I had linux on the system but now I want to install win xp. All my drives other than my HDD are USB controlled (even the floppy). I cannot boot to a cd (even if I ask to boot to USB Device) but I can boot to a floppy. Once I boot to a floppy I am able to load the config and autoexec to allow me to read the USB CD drive. I placed the win xp home edition disc in the cd drive and changed typed e:\setup. I received an error stating "cannot start in dos mode". So I changed to e:\i386 directory and typed winnt. It started to go into the blue screen and asked where my installation files were located. I browsed to the e: drive (CD Drive). It gave me an error "setup is out of memory. cannot continue." How can install win xp if it gives me a cannot start in dos mode error or how can I bypass the out of memory error? I tried copying the I386 directory from the cd drive to c:\i386 and typing winnt.exe. Still same problem .. I get "setup out of memory. Cannot continue."

Please help. Even if I have to start from scratch and reformat the HD.

Thanks,

Pierre
