If you are serious about trying to remove/duplicate gum on sidewalk,
how about the remedy for removing gum from clothes, i.e. freeze it
then it comes off more easily. And if your client is serious, s/he
needs to get a life. I can't imagine anything in Levittown being
historic, at least not to the point of wanting to keep a dirty
sidewalk.
A couple of weeks ago I was watching a contractor installing a slip
lining into the sanitary sewer lines in front of our US Court House. I
said something to the effect to be careful of our court house because
it is historic. One of the supervisors was from Ireland, with a broad
accent. He looked around at downtown Fort Worth and asked, in all
seriousness, what is historic? I had to laugh because I could see what
his background was giving him for reference, Stonehenge and centuries
of history. I explained about the fifty year mark that we use. It was
his turn to laugh. It is all relative. -Grace

We have a project near Levitown, LI where we have to restore a concrete
sidewalk to match an existing historic sidewalk (1960's). The customer is
giving us something of a problem over the round black splotches on the surface
of the existing sidewalk. We either have to find a way to remove what we
believe to be old bubble gum (cross section looks kind of pink) without doing
damage to the substrate, or we have to find a way to accurately mimic dirty
gum on the new sidewalk. We are not sure if this is Bazooka, Wrigleys, or a
mixture of brands. Someone suggested Clove? We have sent samples off for
analysis and we have been talking to some food vendors about possible
substitute products to use. Has anyone had any experience with no-harm removal
of or outright faking of gum on sidewalks? Are there any guidelines for this
that conform with Secretary of Interior standards?
