Hi Peggy,
I haven't seen this mentioned so I will mention it. In your router setup screens, at least with my Linksys routers, there is a box where you can set the number of clients (computers) allowed to access through the router. On my routers the default is 50, but if you are using a different brand or maybe it was mistakenly changed.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

You could help us by describing the setup more clearly.
What's the model no. of the router?
It sounds as though the modem is operating correctly.
The modem should be connected via ethernet to the WAN or Internet port
  of the router.
Each computer should be connected via ethernet to the router ports.

Ipconfig should then give you something like this (With a different IP
  address for each computer):

  Windows IP Configuration
  Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

           Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.md.comcast.net.
           IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
           Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
           Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
The Default Gateway is the router address, and most routers will show a
setup or info page if you enter that address in the address bar of
Internet Explorer (Look in your manual for the default password. For
  Linksys products, it's "admin".
