Thanks to everyone for responding to my questions about Hip Pain and
whether or not it can radiate from the intestines. There is a lot of
information here and I am going to try and follow up on it - I'll post
again in the future if I have any successes - but wanted to share the
responses with all of you.

Best Regards,

Mary

>From Shareen:

Have a question from left field for you. Have you ever been given
steroids
by your docs?

If so, you may want them to check you for avascular necrosis. How do I
know
about this? I have it in both hips and knees. It is often misdiagnosed
for
years.

>From Barb:
I have had hip pain for over 15 years. I have been to lots of
therapists. massage therapists, taken meds, tried to figure out what
physical activities helped and hindered. It seemed like anything I did
except walking very tall made it worse. Then along came my almost like-
god therapist who refered me to the book "The Trigger Point Therapy
Workbook" by Claire Davies. After working on my body for a few years
using this book I am almost pain free. I think having undiagnosed
celiac made it worse since my muscles couldn't heal and I continue
having muscle spasms that kick up the hip pain. The muscle spasms occur
because I can only eat 12 foods (I am allergic to all the rest) and so I
don't get a good balance of nutrients even though I am taking scads of
supplements.

The hip pain is triggered by a few different muscles but the main
problem is a lower back muscle running next to my spine and my psoas
muscle running on the inside of my spine accessed via the abdomen. I
check these every few days for tender spots, put thumb pressure on them
for 1-2 minutes until the pain goes away. This relieves the hip pain.

>From Valerie in Tacoma:

When you tell me the pain radiates to your knee, it makes me think of
two
things: IT band problems & sciatica.

Is your hip pain worse after you sit for a while? And when you rise to
walk, you first few steps are the worst? Is the pain aggravated by
activity
at all? Does the pain lessen if you take aspirin or ibuprophen? If
the
answer to these is yes, it may be a I-T band problem. If it is, there's
a
really easy fix for this. I had it for years, but a PT showed me the
fix.
Let me know & I'll share what I know about that.

The other thing it could be is sciatica. I don't know what do to for
that
because I've never had it!

>From Ben and Janna:
I haven't heard of anything related to intestinal disorders and hip
pain.

I personally have pain in my "I.T. Band", which is a muscle that runs
from
your hip area down the side of your thigh and across the front to your
knee.
My IT Band is tight and this causes pain in my hip and knee. Perhaps
you
have something similar.

------------------------
Pain radiating from the hip down the leg is much more likely to orginate
in the lumbar spine than the intestine. MRI of the lumbar spine to
include the sacrum would be the best study.

------------------------

Pain that radiates from the hip to the knee sounds like sciatica to me.
The
sciatic nerve runs along the length of the leg and can be very painful
when
it is irritated. Exercises and simple stretches can be done to
alleviate
the pain. This is a very common problem.

Yes, hip pain can actually be from intestinal pain. Before I was
diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I had debilitating pain in my low
back, hips, and knees (and sometimes wrists and fingers) - with the gut
in remission, so to went the pain. Well, actually that was 10 years ago,
but last Feb I hurt my back cleaning carpets - had two bulging disks,
and the process of having so much muscle spasm actually caused one side
to atrophy and the other to overdevelop, and this imbalance pulled the
pelvis out of alignment with the spine; had some success with a
chiropractor (but then my neck started cracking all of the time), and
better success with a physical therapist who gave exercises to rebalance
the muscles. Walking should help, too, but it is nearly 7 months later,
and though I'm glad I can stand and walk, I am frustrated that I still
have nagging pain, esp. left side low back and knee. My guess is that
sometimes it is well worth it to keep seeking assistance until the right
nail is hit - I think I still have one more (at least) to deal with, and
I may go to a physiatrist next (back specialists who try to avoid
surgery and even drugs, trying to maximize success with physical
therapy; we have none in my town, but at this point I can drive and
becoming more and more willing to do so (though the gas will be at least
$25 a visit, not to mention the hours of driving back and forth...).
Good luck!

Hi Mary - I had hip pain for years and found relief through cranial
sacral
facial release therapy. Many physical therapy offices have these
therapists
on staff. Hope it helps you too. Nancy

I would worry about back or sciatic nerve problems. These will
frequently radiate to a hip &/or down the leg. I thought for a long
time that I had hip arthritis, until my chiropractor fixed it when I
went for my back. I would recommend getting your back checked out by a
good chiropractor or osteopath.
        Good luck!!!

------------------------------------

Sounds to me like you have "sciatica" - pain which radiates from the
spine where the sciatic nerve has become inflammed (although the spine
may not hurt) that travels down the buttocks to the hip and sometimes
the knee.
If I were you, I would seek our a good chiropractor to start with.

GOOD LUCK & GOOD HELATH to you,'

I don't think so but go to a chiropractor for your hip and the fitness
center this keeps my hip problem in check
 weight bearing really helps

Nerve pain can definitely be associated with celiac. Unfortunately, it
can sometimes be difficult to reverse if the damage is bad. I hope your
pain gets better.

Sincerely,

Mary K
