Hi Dean,
I am in the same situation as you. My older APC UPS units could be silenced,
but the newer APC1000 continues to beep as long as the power is out.
Checking with APC tech support I was informed that this is part of their
design and there is no way to configure it otherwise. Although I planned to
install a switch to turn off the beeper, I never got to doing so. If I get a
chance to try it soon, I will let you know the results.

I have quite a number of APC surge protector/power supplies located
throughout my house. When the power goes off, as it did at 5:30am today, I
get an assorted cacophony of beeps, which I find highly annoying and would
like to quiet. The latest, a model 1250, has a mute button, which I think
worked ok. The previous one, a 950, has no way of muting as far as I can
tell. Some of the older ones can be set to go off only when the battery
level gets low. Generally, however, they can not be set the way I would
like to have them set!
I wonder if anyone here has successfully gone into these and silenced them
by cutting the wires to their beepers? Or unsuccessfully? ( Please, no
lectures on why I should not silence them. :) )
