When you say "two way cable", do you mean a "crossover"?  That's what you
need to be using....

  [How to identify a crossover cable:  Hold up the two cable connectors next
to each other, so you're looking at the flat side opposite the little tab.
Look through the clear plastic of the connector.  If the colours of the
individual wires are in the same sequence on both connectors, this is an
ordinary "straight through" cable.  If they're different, there's about a
99% chance that this is a crossover cable, and a 1% chance that it has been
made incorrectly.]

  Once you have the right cable, there may be additional issues to resolve --
 but the cable is the place to start troubleshooting this.
