From horsecars to steamcars:

Tramways responded to a public need.  Cities
were expanding because of industrialization
and their consequent population growth.  People
could no longer walk comfortably between their
homes and the places where they worked.

The length of time for such a trip is ideally
believed to be no more than about twenty minutes.
When the trip lasts more than twenty minutes,
there is an incentive to introduce improved
transport.  The horsecar was not the ideal vehicle
to solve the problems of urban transport during
the Victorian period.

The principal difficulty was not the slowness
of the vehicles.  Most of their users thought
that a speed of six or seven miles per hour
was great enough.

The real problem was that the horses were not
strong enough.  They drew cars up hills with
great difficulty.  They got tired so rapidly
that each car drawn by two horses demanded a
stable of from seven to eleven horses all
together.  The useful life of street-railway
horses was only four years, and the costs of
feeding them and maintaining veterinary services
for them were quite high.

As a result, profits for horsecar lines were
small, and their owners had to consider the
possibility of mechanical traction.
