Leland,
I am reminded of the Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn, Williamsburg,
associated with the builder of the USS Monitor. We wanted to match the
aggregate in the mortar which was a dark sand, not like the predominant
yellow sand found on the remainder of Long Island (keep in mind Brooklyn
is on Long Island). So we were buying sand at $25.00 a bag from NJ. That
also meant we had to send someone to drive out to NJ to get the bags of
sand. We were fortunate that we did not need a whole lot of sand, and
costs and logistics like this help to restrict repointing to 'as needed'
rather than the occasional recommendation of wholesale 100%. Later in
the project a plumber had to do an excavation and we found all of the
wonderful perfectly matching dark sand under our feet.
