I agree, I've never broken one, but I don't like SMA connectors.

Hi Tom, sounds like you're giving your son all the right prompts.  indeed,
the adapter cable may not be plugged all the way in, and the lil rubber
gasket _might present a problem, although I suspect it's more likely to be a
short in the adapter cable.  _Definitely so if the radio works ok on the
duck.  If he has any other handheld with either a bnc or coax ant
connection, try that ht directly into the cable to see what happens.  Also,
of course, if he has one of the sma2bnc adapters or sma2coax plug adapters,
rather than the cable, lay the ht flat on a table and atatch the adapter
having already been hooked to the outside ant.  (Never did like sma
connecters anyway, but what do i know? dd
