Yes, the 1103 has direct tuning as well as the tuning knob.  The tuning knob
also functions as the volume control.  My understanding is that you press a
volume/tuning button to toggle the mode of the knob.  I think this feature
has been the only criticism of the 1103.  Many folks would prefer a separate
control for the volume, but most believe the design is easy to adapt to.
