The only other option I see for Tom would be to run a mono band radio--in
this case for uhf. I've actually seen set ups where people have a radio for
those two bands--vhf and uhf. They obviously run an antenna switcher in line
but I think it's quite an abstract way to operate though. Apparently people
don't mind.

Hi Tom, most dual band mobile radios don't offer this option for some
reason. The PL encode wouldn't help either, as you would still be
hearing the repeater on VHF when you transmit on U H F, so you would
still decode the PL tone. My FT470 HT also does not mute the opasitband
while transmitting, which is even more of a problem with a handheld!
