Hello all,
On the KNSD (San Diego NBC channel 39/7) (URL is at end of letter) news
this evening they did a segment about eye disease. The main line was that
blindness will more than double over the next few years. They had their
doctor consultant, who just happens to be an eye doctor, on the segment.
Among her comments: "get the eye diseases the aging get. On top of that
it is going to lead to disabilities of visual disturbances that are not
only scary, they are very debilitating and people will need more care". The
old "fate worse than death syndrome" is this "doctor's affliction".
"Sickening" is the only way that I can discribe my feelings. What is
REALLY SCARY is the impact this has on the attitudes toward those with
visual impairments and that a news station would broadcast it.
I would say this is a doctor who not only does not know what she is talking
about, but is a person with a serious attitude problem. I am preparing a
complaint to the station management and to the FCC. Any assistance and
letters sent to them are appreciated. It will take us all to be sure that
our voices are heard and listened to. Let them know the truth, loss of
sight is not a "fate worse than death" and we live, work, go school, marry,
have families and do most everything the same as anyone else, some things
we just do differently.
