Thanks to all that responded to my question as to whether there might be
a connection between narcolepsy and gluten intolerance. Since posting
the question and today, I've acted on my positive Enterolab tests for
milk and gluten intolerances and have seen a marked reduction in what I
now know as "gluten fog". No more falling asleep during conversations
and less inappropriate drowsiness at the wheel and even after dinner!
The following is an approximate summary of what you all told me:
* 16 people mentionned "gluten fog", several of them stating that
they know if they have accidentally ingested gluten by whether
they get inappropriately sleepy and all saying that, since going
gluten free, they no longer experience periods of sleepiness
during low key activities such as reading or TV
* 1 said that, since going gf, she is no longer sleepy in the day,
but added that she also now wakes up at 5AM and can't get back to
sleep
* 4 said that their symptoms of inappropriate drowiness had not
changed since giving up gluten
* 5 said that their drowiness was from sleep apnea, not gluten
intolerance
* 5 suggested I look into food (specifically corn, peanuts nad milk)
and chemical sensitivities as the basis for my sleepiness
* 1 said it might be hormonal
* 1 suggested I alter the number and times of my meals
* 1 said exercise (3 miles of walking perday) reduced her sleepiness
* 1 said there is a relationship between the gene for Celiac and
narcolepsy
