I just fixed a friends computer that lost sound.  She had somehow destroyed the driver.  If you right click my computer, lc Hardware and just look for a yellow ?.  You will find it is the sound driver.  deinstall or delete it, then reboot and you will get "find new hardware", it will ask for system disk, and reload a new driver and thats it.
Course it could be something else but software seems most vulnerable
