Trisha,
I post rarely but read frequently.

As you have heard from the others on the list this is a
potentially very serious issue.

Frequent vomiting, no matter what the cause (emotional
upset, bulemia, other... irritates the GI tract including
the muscular structures that help us to control the flow of
food down the esophagus and into the stomach. Over time,
this irritation can cause the muscles not to work as well
which actually makes it "easier" for the stomach acids and
partially digisted food to back up into rhe esophagus and
even to the throat.

This is gastric reflux. Untreated reflux can cause severe
damage to the esophagus (ulcers,etc.)

Also, in a cyclical manner, the vomiting can lead to the
development of reflux, but the reflux with continued
irritation of the esophagus and throat, can in turn make
it "easier" to vomit setting up a cycle leadig to the
potentioal for further damage.

However you decide to handle this, it needs to be handled
soon.

For the record, as regards whether you should or should not
have informed the voice teacher... I'm conflicted.
Yes, in "black and white" since this individual is an adult
you probably should not have said anything. BUT given that
you are far away from her and given the potential
consequenses of not intervening, its a hard call.

If your daughter trust the voice teacher, please encourage
her to follow through with the reccomendation for testing.
Regardless of your feelings about what causes this young
woman to vomit, bottom line it's the vomiting that is doing
damage and that needs to be addressed.

Hoping you find this helpful,

Bonnie
