It's been a while since I've done legacy modems.
I have to ask, does this modem have jumpers on it to set the com port and
irq?

If it does, set it to  com port 2, Irq 3 (I believe.)
In the machine make sure that com 2 is disabled, and only com 1 is actively
used at IrQ4 (whether you
have anything hooked up to it or not - assuming the maching has 2 com
ports).

You should go thru safe mode and remove any other instances you find in the
windows Device manager.
Also you should only have com 1 listed in the hard serial ports.

Intall the modem, windows should find the new hard ware and ask for the
driver.  You msy have to have
windows search and find it manually.  It should set up as com 2 if the
jumpers are set correctly.

I also remember that it was very difficult to set to com 4 ( if 1 and 2 were
being used) if com 3
was not installed.  Some times I had to put a serial card in at com 3, so
the modem would work on com 4,
but this was under win 95/98.

Hopefully this gives you something to try.

Hi

I'm having trouble installing an internal modem board.  I've done this
before without problem on different machines.

IBM Z Pro
P3 550 x two
1 gig memory
Win2k Pro clean legal install
10/100 Ethernet
TXTR laser

On PCI3 I am inserting a 3COM 56k data/fax modem.  Upon boot, it is not
recognized in plug and play.  When I add it manually, it does not work.

I have tried removing the Ethernet and laser boards and inserting the modem
in their slots.  Upon boot up, it recognizes something new, but cannot
identify it.  Again, when I add it manually, it does not work.

I've tried two different modems and still cannot get it.  Do I need to
install a third COM?

I know little more than how to turn a computer on.
