I recently tried to install XP on a Gateway 2000 and failed despite many
efforts. You can buy recovery discs from Gateway fairly cheap. I think
that's probably the besy way to go.
The Gateway site has considerable info on this subject, including driver and
BIOS updates, and you should probably start there if you want to upgrade the
OS. Maybe Win 2000 would work, but I don't consider that an upgrade for a
home computer.

My son has his girlfriend's gateway 2000 computer to fix. The hard drive
was bad and he replaced it. Now the message on screen "operating system
missing". She can not find her recovery disk. Would any Gateway recovery
cd work? Would I need to buy a windows 98SE cd? Will I be missing
drivers?
