Well, it looks like Gambians are in for a very rude awakening. The
problem is most of the things at the moment are taken for granted,
oblivious to the fact that for the past few decades there has been a
silent revolution that has captivated the consciousness of most
progressive Gambians. The Gambia can no longer be where some people
would want to take it.
We had a first republic that lasted for more than three decades. We
have a second republic that is more than a decade. There isn't much of a
difference between the two, except the level and the degree to which the
dereliction of trust to public duty adversely affected the country.
We know the problems, and our commitment is to learn from the lessons
so as to build the future. Not only are we to build the future, but the
foundations for a democtratic culture and a sustainable development
paradigm for a third and final republic.
What NADD has attempted to do, is what should have been done in the
first place when our countries attained indepenence. Most of those who
led the struggle for independence came from very humble backgrounds. But
once they assumed power, they alienated themselves from the realities
from whose bowels their origins emanated. They became lords over their
peoples; their became demi-gods, who were mystified, revered and
glorified. It was through this tortuous path of servility, docility,
marginalization, ignorance and complete neglect, that the decadent story
of the woeful plight of the African masses continued to be told.
To those who have a natural disposition to mobilize, to appeal, to
arouse and to exhort other members of their groups to enhace their own
group interest; beware, for those who perpetuate such group interest,
when they gain power only represent their interest and other class
interest at the detriment of that group interest.
