Some time back, I swapped motherboards on an XP system.  Being an old
hand at Win 98, I confidently swapped out the board and powered up the
system.  To my dismay, I was unable to boot.  To make a long story
short, I was VERY lucky to finally recover my data.

As for the activation - it shouldn't be a problem, especially if this is
the first time you've had to reactivate.  The worst-case scenario is
that you would have to call it in instead of having it auto-update on
the internet.
