Jeff,
I have never faced the problem of antennaes and apartments. Friends
have gotten dipoles and random lengths of wire up in the attic with
varying degrees of success. Others have gotten very thin wires
outside and in to trees. The first snow or sleet storm and the game
is up!! And one can run a mobile antenna with a short radial or two
mounting the antenna on a balcony railing.
Short answer; whatever you can get away with and works.
