Greetings, all.

I have a kenwood 2,000 with voice chip, and for the most part am very
pleased with it. I am still learning it and playing with different modes
and such, but I've run across a few things which I can't easily solve or
seem to find solutions for.

First, I am having a lot of problems tuning in some frequencies which I'm
sure the rig ought to be able to pick up. Everytime I try, it throws it
back at the same setting it was on. For instance, our local emergency
service freq is 155.205. Everytime I try to get there - whether via the
numpad on the front, the tuning dials, computer control, etc. It always
stays where i left it or it will shift back to the same band I was on. I
know I can modify my band ranges via software or menmus settings - and I
am guessing this might solve the issue, but that seems a bad idea to me.
I don't want it thinking I'm on a valid ham band, even though I have no
intentions of sending while on those freqs.

Secondly, I like to use IRLP and echolink on some of hte local repeators.
I am not much for using the echolink software, personally. I have had
problems with the echolink repeator not accepting my 3 DTMF tone. It
pretty regularly ignores it. My wattage, antenna, and the speed at which
it is sent doesn't seem to matter. The repeator will accept that tone
from other radios, including my hand-held though - when conditions are
favorable enough for the hand-held to hit the repeator cleanly. Does any
one know what I might could to to help oliviate this situation? I am
having to use the menu and the quick memo to do the DTMF dialing because I
don't own and am hoping not to have to pay for the special microphone with
the keypad.

Third, I am researching packet radio and software to run with the radio.
I don't have an external tnc or mcp, and don't plan to buy any within the
near future. I also don't have the circuit needed to connect a soundcard
up to the radio to use PSK31 and some of the other modes that the built-in
tnc won't handle. Does anyone have any suggestions on programs to look
for or that work well with windows xp/jaws for packet/ax modes nad rtty if
it is covered? I've found winpacket, but it seems a bit out-dated, and
several other programs, but I'm looking for freeware, and although I may
have found a good program, I'd like to see what others' opinions are.

Thanks in advance for any responses/thoughts.

73's,
Greg Osborne
