The Radio Shack DX398 or Sangean 808 is an excellent portable that would meet your needs.  They don't make it any longer as a smaller unit replaced it.  I haven't looked at the replacement yet, but you might check the
Sangean offerings on-line to see what the new model is called.  I don't know for sure, but Radio Shack may have an equivalent.  The Grundig Yachtboy 400 isn't as resistant to overload and is generally not as good, but it is available and would work for you.
