Tom,

I have tried a number of 160 meter antennas from a shunt fed 55 foot tower,
to an 85 foot sloper with a coil at the tower end to make it seem longer, to
a short 32 foot vertical with a 12 foot capasity hat which I sent a
description to World Radio many years ago and they printed it. It is right
down amazing the short antennas that will work on 160 meters. I even took a
G5RV and added 20 feet of wire to either end and with a tuner, I could tune
160 meters. It was very narrow and I had to retune about every 5 to 10 kHz
but that's just about true with any short antenna on the top band. I even
had a three way quarter wave sloper switchable antenna for 80 meters once,
each leg was about 60 feet long, and I used to tune just one of those legs
through my tuner on 160 and I worked Hawaii on side band one night and got a
5 6 signal report. I used to get, with the same short wired grounded to the
tower, 20 over 9 reports from Utah. I can send you a copy of my article
about the 32 foot vertical if you like.

Phil.
