well, there is the possibility of echo-link and the IRLP nodes that will
allow you to use 2 meters and 70 centimeters to talk all over the world
using something as small as a hand held radio as long as you are close to
alink or a node.
With a good antenna with about 40 feet of height, you should be able to talk
about 60-70 KM in good conditions with 50 watts on VHF.
