Problem solved. I got a reply to my Tech support request:
"Sir, You could decrease your memeory frequency to ddr 333mzh or change
CL of memory to test . If not , Maybe it's the second slot. problem or
compatible problem with this memory and the motherboard "
I decreased the frequency to 333, and the board immediately booted.
I suspect I'm not losing much, but any comments on this would be helpful.
It might not be a dream system, but it's the best I've ever had:
ASUS A8V Deluxe
AMD 64 3400+
1 30 GB IDE HD
2 80 GB Maxtor RAID 0
1 150GB SATA Maxtor HD
2.0 GB DDR RAM
XP Home
CD, DVD RW
I suspect I'd be better off connecting the 30 GB HD to the onboard
Promise Controller, but I've been troubleshooting for so long I want to
just enjoy my new toy for a while.
Thanks for all the help.

If I'm looking at the correct model manual, the memory information is on page 2.11. There is mention made there that system boot failure may be a result of using memory not found on ASUS's approved table on page
