A stone artefact is any piece of stone that was given its shape by a
human being. A stone implement is an artefact that was made for a
specific purpose. Artefact is thus the more embracing term and includes
the by-products of making implements. One purpose of this chapter is to
advise the fieldworker on how to collect artefacts. A second purpose is
to provide the fieldworker with special knowledge to aid in the
recognition of stone artefacts. It is not a guide to the typology of
stone implements, a leisurely pursuit that is already catered for by
publications and instructive displays in museums.
