It is used as a supposedly safer alternative to the poisonous byproduct of  
aluminum smelting known variously as rat poison, warfarin, coumadin.  
Preferred by those who fear the chemicals prescribed by M.D.s.

Paleofood does the same thing without the nasty side effects.
