Jim,
I assume you are referencing the history presentation in the church. It
was a most cogent explanation of the levee & flood situation over
hundreds of years of history, let alone recent events and is the sort of
information that needs wider exposure to the world-at-large. It was also
interesting that the geography, hydrography etc. was tied in w/ the
architectural precedents (seems the flood surviveable historical
architectureof the Lower 9 & Holy Cross was influenced by the French
accumulation of building-materials technique derived from their
colonization experience, and in effect went back centuries into tropical
cultural building techniques). If Mr. Dillard came to talk in Houston it
would certainly help folks there understand why folks from NOLA are not
moving home so quickly and cld help reduce some of the animosity that
has developed. The apartment rental industry in Houston has been hit
hard due to the fact that the govt. does not pay up very well for the
rental units. Add to that increased crime & there is a strong
anti-refuge feeling in Houston.
David Dillard, AIA has twenty three years in the practice of
architecture, specializing in design, historic restoration, forensic
investigation and computer aided design and modeling. He is a graduate
of the Mississippi State University School of Architecture and graduate
student in the Tulane University Department of Historic Preservation.
He is a member of the Vieux Carré Commission Architectural Review Committee.

We are fortunate through serendipity to have most of Rudy's Thursday
talk on vid though Rudy can't go to Houston w/out me cause I can't have
two brothers in the same town at the same time w/out being there. So if
you want Rudy to visit & yammer in Houston you got to figure on
sponsorship for two bohunks. Besides, he needs somebody to stand by w/ a
ready pillow. Note: Rudy did not hit you up to pay off my gambling debts
too did he?
During Mr. Dillard's presentation, of which I was sitting front &
center, I nodded off and Jim nudged me in the ribs. Man, these events
wear you out something terrible and sitting is not the most convenient
activity. Then, my cell phone rang. The schedule & map for the event,
there was a whole lot of walking (I had a real nice walk in the rain w/
Roy Underhill wqhere he got to see the Captain's houses for the first
time), was sticking out of my back pocket and when I stood up it hooked
on the back of the folding metal chair. The chair came up with me in one
quick motion and I fell from it on my ass on the floor in the middle of
Mr. Dillard's presentation. I then got up and went in to the foyer to
answer the call... I was told I am TOO LOUD on the cell phone... the
call was for the last invite to tour the levees w/ the fellow from the
Corp of Engineers. The two presentations would have gone really well
together but I had to turn down the tour if I wanted to hear the end of
Mr. Dillard's presentation. Keep in mind that during these events I
rarely if ever actually sit through any presentations... and I guess I
cld not resist not sitting through this one either. Good thing the PTN
pre-event troops had put the floor back in place for me to do a bit of
demonstrable assina on it!
