It has to do with the amount of light they get in a
day. Commercial/farm chickens often have extended
days due to artificial light. My mom's chickens
(organic pasteured heritage breeds) definitely have a
drop in egg production in the winter months, but
leaving a light on in the coop will increase it
somewhat.
