First and foremost, I want to thank all of you for your overwhelming
responses. A few of you wanted to know: I am 42 yrs. old and not in
menopause, I do have hypothyrodism and am currently taking Synthroid
which is monitored every 3 months.

Here is what you had to say:

Do you eat some starch in the evening? Rice, g-f pasta products,
potatoes,
bananas etc? Going to sleep on an empty stomach does not assist
sleeping..

I am a 81 year old woman, dairy and gluten intolerant, have had
insomnia
off and on for a long time. It can be a real problem... in fact, did
not
sleep hardly at all last night.
Exercise helps, but not always... I am often up in the middle of the
night,
doing dishes, reading, on the computer.. eating... I wish I knew the
answer...

Walking after work, even 15 minute walk. Taking a
GF calcium supplement each night, about an hour before bed, I use
Solaray Calcium Citrate. Eating a few walnuts sometime in the early
evening, eating turkey for lunch (natural tryptophan, really works), a
banana and milk if you can't sleep. Chamomile tea. I have also noticed
if I eat really high protein meals w/o many carbs, I can have trouble
sleeping. I think a few healthy carbs help me to crash.

If you are still up, try eating some fresh grated nutmeg. I keep a
small jar of whole nutmegs and grate just about a teaspoon or so with a
microplane grater. I sometimes grate more ahead of time and keep it in
another jar, it will keep fresh for about 2 weeks. (I have not had the
same results from ground nutmeg from the store. That's why I grate it
fresh myself.) You can add it to your herb tea, sprinkle it on your
banana, or just swallow a spoonful and wash it down with milk or water.
(Or add it to your baking/cooking.) It really works! Puts me right out!
It's also an awesome remedy for intestinal gas. Works immediately.
You're not supposed to overdo the nutmeg though. I would not eat more
than a few teaspoons at a time.

There are also herbal and homeopathic remedies for sleep that work
quite well for insomnia. You can check the internet and read up on them
or go to your local health food store/pharmacy. Herbs: valerian root,
passion flower, hops, skullcap, vervain. Homeopathic: Kali phos., Calms
Forte, also Bach Flower Essences-you'll have to read up on which ones
for insomnia.

I did have trouble sleeping for a while. However, once I was taking the
proper supplements, this problem went away. Most of us have
malabsorption issues and trouble sleeping can be due to that. Some
things that have helped me sleep are Natural Calm (magnesium
powder--brand is Natural Vitality--I have told others about this product
and it has helped them as well), taking my calcium supplements at night,
and I also take progesterone because I have had a hysterectomy. Oh,
daily exercise helps also. I do walking and yoga. I am sure not all of
those will apply, but hope the info helps.

If you can take calcium that helps to sleep along with drinking kiefer.

find that my sleep is easily messed up by various things - a tiny bit of
extra caffeine, chocolate, a Sudafed, even Benadryl, which though it may
cause drowsiness, it causes vivid, exhausting dreams and easy waking.
Ditto for anything with nitrite (bacon, sandwich meats), and even
artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives can be problematic. For
me, getting adequate hydrating fluids, extra calcium/magnesium/zinc and
B vitamins, not to mention adequate fresh air and exercise can make all
the difference in the world.

I had not thought of it but since going GF 20+ years ago I have slept
very well after years of not sleeping. I have a period of two to four
days that I do not sleep well two or three times a year but it does not
bother me as I know it will pass after a few days.

Hi,Well before I was DX with Celiac I always had sleep deprivation and
snored like a bear,I didn't know I snored though I just was always tired
(because I wasn't actualy getting any sleep).I had a sleep study that
found I had Apnia.I got a
C-PAP machine which blows air into my lungs at night and slept like a
baby from the first night on,Made a profound difference in my life. One
interesting thing was that when I lost all my weight while not being
correctly DXed for celiac I was able to sleep with a much lower pressure
setting.Hey there was something positive about this!!!Anyway,I don't
know if you snore or if this may be you,but a sleep study will find this
out for you

I, too have had difficulty sleeping since going gf almost 2 years ago. I
don't sleep straight through any night and wake up every 2 hours or so.
I haven't tried anything for it, just thought it must be my body's sleep
cycle now that I'm 40. My husband seems to think that perhaps the body
is now absorbing various nutrients that it hadn't before, and that may
be affecting my sleep, or lack thereof.

I have trouble sleeping, too. I think it's because I'm not eating the
carbs
I used to eat with bread, pasta, potatoes. I've also cut out dark soft
drinks b/c of the caramel coloring being on the forbidden foods list on
www.celiac.com . Sometimes IF I find something to eat that is sweet,
like
jam on a rice cake (yeah, I'm desperate) right before bed, I'll sleep
better.

I would recommend getting your thyroid checked by an open-minded
endocrinologist or a good naturopath. For many years I had undiagnosed
hypothyroidism and lots of sleep problems. After finally getting a
correct diagnosis and adjusting to the correct dosage of Armour
Thyroid, I sleep well and feel rested.

Read the book Mastering Leptins by Byron Richards, CCN. It tells how
hormones get out of whack from diet problems. (You might want to start
by reading the chapter on sleep.) Melatonin is the hormone that controls
sleep and Acettyl L Carnitine also plays a roll in sleeping well and
helping the body produce growth hormone. After I was dxed, I was
extremely deficient in Carnitine.

I have the same trouble. I believe it is because of lack of calcium
absorption. I was recently told to increase both Vitamin D and
magnesium, and when I do, it does seem to help.
