I have since had a few more replies about maltitol. 

I became just as sick from eating a gluten-free cookie with malitol as from
gluten itself.  I understand it causes a lot of people intestinal problems.
I have been advised by others on this list to avoid all the additives ending
in -ol.  (sorbitol, also).

Maltitol is gf, so far as I know, but it can cause gas and diarrhea, as also sorbitol can do. This effect has nothing to do with celiac; it can happen to anyone. I have seen warnings on occasional labels about this side effect.
